Love stories are made of moments.
Fiance and I have been together for nearly eight years. We have setled into routines and habits, and we certainly have had our share of ups and downs. For the most part, we live a rather normal, quiet yet satisfying life. The magic is in the moments.
We had not been living together very long. I woke up mid-morning on a Saturday. Fiance was still asleep. As I regrettably opened my eyes, the softest, most perfect sunlight flooded our bedroom. Everything was quiet. The air was cool, and the light was warm. Fiance signed, rolled over, and moved in closer to me. In that moment, I needed nothing more. I longed for nothing. I desired nothing more than what I had right then and there. I become overwhelmed with a sense of deep contentment, which can only be felt in the still presence of the person you love most. I will never forget that moment.
The second moment that springs to mind occured several years later. Time: Saturday afternoon. Location: our friends' gorgeous 18th century home. (We were housesitting). If memory serves, we were preparing to host a dinner party (with our friends' permission). Both in festive moods, we played with the dog, dancing and singing as we prepped the food for later that evening. As I ran from the kitchen to the laundry room to put in a new load, Fiance simply said, "You're the one, kid." I stopped dead in my tracks, unsure if I had heard him correctly. My stomach knotted in the way it used to when we first started dating.
"Did you hear?" he asked.
"Yeah, I heard."
(Long pause).
"I love you."
That's all I said. There was no need to say anything else He had said it all.
A year later, I came home after a particularly rough day at work. In a grumpy mood, I put on my grossest sweats, threw my hair into a topknot, grabbed a magazine, requested a glass of wine, and plopped myself onto the couch. Very attractive, I assure you. In no time, Fiance had me laughing and my mood had improved. Jokingly, I informed him that this Michael Kors watch on this page of this magaine would make it all better. In true Fiance style, he suavely leaned over he couch and presented me with a small box. All he said was, "I don't thave a watch, but how 'bout a ring?"
Love stories are made of moments. Our love story might not be worthy of Hollywood, but the best ones rarely are.
So to Shannon and Hal, I wish for you a lifetime of moments.
