"The minute I heard my first love story, I started looking for you, not knowing how blind that was. Lovers don't finally meet somewhere, they're in each other all along."
- Rumi
The quote had been written on a sheet of paper and taped to one of the walls in the small acting studio I attended in college. It hadn't always been there; one day it simply appeared. As days passed (and eventually turned into years), I found myself more and more enchanted by the thought: lovers do not meet, they are within one another all along. It seems both foreign and familiar at the same time.
We ask new couples, couples getting married, couples who have been together for years, how they met. Why don't we ask, "how did you recognize one another?" The heart sometimes knows right away; sometimes it is cautious, taking its time to open and see love clearly. But there are few sights filled with as much beauty and hope as seeing two people who have recognized each other, promising to hold that love and discovery sacred.
